Week 2 Professional Learning Journal

Write in one or a few sentences your version of something important new that you learned last week that is relevant to the current week's topic.
  • From the issues we talked about last week, and the relation to this week, I think the one thing that I am pondering over is the dynamic between online privacy and personal branding. I've been working on my personal brand for the last year. This has consisted in a coordinated resume, business cards, portfolio, and specific actions to craft the message I want to relay with these mediums. More and more I have transfered this information into the online realm. Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Blogging, and Shared Feeds have been part of my strategic online presence as part of my personal brand. I've found that the control I have with sharing my brand in physical-real life interaction is much more controlled than sharing the same information online. At first, a clean transfer from physical to online domain I thought would be appropriate. I'm beginning to learn that the different medians need to have different shared information, while at the same time conveying the same message I desire. I'll need to look over my different networks in the next couple of weeks and craft something that is appropriate, specific, and relay the same message I desire.

Pose a question from one of your readings that would lead to fruitful class discussion — a discussion you are prepared to lead, if called upon.

  • How much time do you think is necessary to invest in personal branding once the basic platforms are in place (blog site, Linkedin profile, etc.)? Should individuals be looking for a return on their investment and if so, what would you consider an appropriate return? Recognition? Job offer? Guest speaking position?
